VBT - Velocity-Based Training
As part of my coaching approach, I’ve recently incorporated Velocity-Based Training (VBT) to help gym-goers and athletes to unlock their full potential in power, strength, and overall performance.
VBT involves measuring the velocity at which a movement is executed, giving me the ability to provide real-time feedback, adjust training loads dynamically, and tailor each session to the individual needs of the client, at any given time.
See below for how and why VBT can be a game-changer for power and strength development.
Objective Load Management
-
Real-Time Feedback: VBT allows me to see exactly how fast a client is moving the bar during every rep. This real-time feedback helps me determine if the intensity is right for their goals, and allows me to make adjustments on the fly.
-
Individualised Intensity: Every person responds differently to training. With VBT, I can adjust the load based on how fast they are moving, ensuring they’re working at the right intensity for them at that moment. This optimises their performance while reducing the chance of overtraining or undertraining.
Improved Power Output
-
Targeting Optimal Training Zones: By measuring velocity, I can pinpoint the exact range where power development is maximised. This is crucial for improving explosive strength and rate of force development (RFD).
-
Faster Explosiveness: Focusing on speed helps clients and athletes develop the ability to generate force quickly, which translates to improved reaction time, quickness, and explosive power.
Enhanced Strength Gains
-
Velocity Loss Thresholds: With VBT, I can set clear thresholds for how much velocity a client/athlete can lose before a set is deemed ineffective. This ensures they’re not wasting energy on sets that no longer meet the desired intensity, but also prevents them from pushing too hard too soon.
-
Precise Overload Control: VBT gives me the ability to track velocity, ensuring clients and athletes are working with the right intensity to make continual strength gains. The velocity measurement also helps me progressively overload in a controlled way, ensuring consistent and safe strength development.
Monitoring Progress
-
Concrete Data on Improvement: Instead of relying on subjective feedback or guesswork, VBT allows me to track someone's velocity progress over time. I can see improvements in how fast they’re lifting, which helps us track real, quantifiable progress.
-
Personalised Adjustments: Since each person has a unique velocity profile, I use VBT to make adjustments based on how they respond to training. Whether they’re recovering well or feeling fatigued, I can modify their program to ensure they’re always working at their best.
Injury Prevention
-
Fatigue Management: Fatigue can lead to injury, but VBT helps me monitor it. When someone's velocity drops significantly, it’s a clear indicator that they’re reaching their limits. This allows me to modify their training load and prevent overtraining.
-
Data-Driven Decisions: By closely monitoring the velocity of each lift, I can spot early signs of fatigue or underperformance, making informed adjustments that reduce injury risk while promoting long-term progress.
Increased Motivation
-
Instant Feedback for Clients/Athletes: Clients and Athletes love seeing their progress in real-time. With VBT, they get immediate feedback on their performance, which helps boost motivation and engagement. They can literally see how their effort translates to results.
-
Trackable Progress: With VBT, clients and athletes can visualise their improvements over time, whether it's a faster sprint or a more powerful lift. This visual progress is a great motivator and reinforces the hard work they put in.
